Quote of the Week

Show Your Consideration

I haven't seen anywhere near all the episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and here's something that I've missed. Brilliant. Reminds me of that scene on Seinfeld where Jerry talks to a phone sales guy and asks for his phone number so he can call him back later. Hey, recycling is good. Upcycling, even, in this case. :-D

Andy Millman on reality TV

Andy Millman being, as you may know, Ricky Gervais' character in his second TV series, Extras. This is from the non-Christmas special from 2007. (They said it wasn't a Christmas special, but it was really. :-) Andy's doing Celebrity Big Brother and has the decency to be thoroughly ashamed of himself.

Now this is a great show.

Coming up October 8th

So, MyDamnChannel has a big premiere coming up this week. Spärhusen, about a fictional 1970s pop band ... who can't pronounce their own band name, apparently. :-D Keanu plays their producer. The series also has some other really cool people, like Illeana Douglas ... I like her a lot. Wallace Langham plays the band's manager and Keanu's best friend Rob Mailhouse plays one of the band members. I'm really looking forward to this. The premiere is on October 8th. I hope I'll be able to see it here right away, even though I'm outside North America.

Here's the trailer. Check out those totally fake-looking wigs. :-) And Keanu imitating a whale. :-D

Speaking of TV, people are stupid. I mean, really stupid. In the new season of Farmer Wants A Wife here in Norway they have a gay guy as one of the farmers. Now apparently TV2 have been getting a bunch of calls complaining about this. People saying that 'farmers shouldn't be gay' or whatever. o_O Not from his neighbors or people who actually know the guy, they all think it's fun that he's on the show. But from totally random strangers who are calling the channel and saying that they 'don't want to see this on TV'. o_O

What I'd like to know is who the hell is forcing them to watch it?? Turn off the damn TV and read a book if it's so offensive to ya. Sheesh, humans.

You're my wife now, Dave ...

I may not have mentioned it before, but I'm a huge fan of The League of Gentlemen. They totally crack me up ... no matter how many times I've seen or heard their stuff before. Those of you who like British humor, extremely dark humor, crazy jokes and fantastic acting - if you haven't checked these guys out before, do it now, you won't be sorry. :-)

Here's Papa Lazarou adding another wife to his harem:

Here's Olive at the dating agency helping out a new customer:

And here are Charlie and Stella busy with their Christmas preparations and metaphorically ripping each others' hearts out:

I would like to go on record as saying that Steve Pemberton is one of the most gifted actors of our time. <-- NOT A JOKE

Amazing coinkydink

OK, that was just too weird.

So, I'm sitting here innocently watching an old episode of Futurama, right? They're doing reruns twice a day on ViaSat4. The episode was one of the Anthology of Interest ones, and I got a little curious about whether those were originally made for one particular time of the year, like the Treehouse of Horror episodes on The Simpsons. (The answer is no.) So I end up on Wiki reading old episode synopses and reminiscing. And while I'm doing that - this is after the episode is over - I've switched the TV to teletext just so I won't be distracted by the commercials or whatever. It's on the front page and the main news item changes every so often. Seriously, this was too weird. Get this.

I'm reading the main page on Wiki about the show, and on the top of the page there's info about the original run, the rerun periods, there's info about the four movies (which I shamefully have not seen yet!!) and then it says that Comedy Central has picked up the show for one new season. OMG brand new season brand new episodes OMG!! :-o I've probably just been in a coma and everybody knows this, but it was total news to me. But of course I'm thrilled, right!!? New Futurama episodes, that's fantastic. I can hardly wait (although, if they're airing in 2010 in the US, when the hell will we get to see them here, then??). Then, after reading this, I scroll down the page and read the list of the cast. Just for the nostalgia of it. Aah, Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio. Bender rules!! On margin, Zoidberg wants to buy on margin!! Ahem. And then I glance at the TV screen, and I see this ...

... the top news item now reads, Futurama Voices Get the Can. o_O I go to the page to read the item, and what it says is that because the original cast are demanding so much money to come back to the show, Comedy Central is now looking for new cast members to voice the new episodes. (I googled a bit and apparently nothing's been decided yet, but they're 'negotiating' for some bizarre reason. There's an article here, for instance.) WTF are the odds of this?? I randomly come across information that I'm totally unaware of, and literally within ten minutes I see these news on teletext that I again had no idea of that is so essential to the first piece of news??

Argh, damn my pattern-finding brain ... !! This is too weird. I want chocolate.

And I also want to go on record as saying that Futurama without John DiMaggio is WRONG and BAD. >:-( Give him the money!!!

Funniest Swede Ever:

The one and only Jonas Gardell!! :-D Never heard of him, you say?? Gasp!! Well, now here's your chance to learn something new today.

Jonas Gardell is the funniest Swede ever. Standup comedian, author, songwriter, screenwriter, singer, all-around renaissance man artist type person. Not to mention a very tough guy. Very tough. He's not very tall, he's not a big guy in any way shape or form, and everyone in his entire country knows that he's gay. What does he do when some neonazis shout at him in a dark and empty street late at night, Fucking faggot!! Is he scared? Sure, who wouldn't be. Does he make like he didn't hear, does he run? Hell no! :-D He goes right up to them and says Excuse me?? What did you just say to me??

Of course they beat the shit out of him, but I mean, seriously, respect!! :-D

This post is first and foremost for the benefit of my friend Dag-Erling, who when we went out to dinner a couple of weeks ago revealed - shockingly!! - that he allegedly has no idea who this Gardell person is. :-o So ... here are some bits and pieces that will at least begin to lift the veil of ignorance. ;-) It's all in Swedish, I'm afraid, but at least one of the clips has English subtitles ... for those of you who are into that kind of thing.

Jonas Gardell - the one, the only, the boy with the elephant pants ... !!!

My favorite piece of anything & everything that he's ever done ever. He explains why he doesn't like horror movies and recounts what he perceives to be a typical sample of the genre. Unbelievably funny.

Talking about the first job he ever got as an entertainer. Help, heelp ... !! Can't anyone heelp me ... !! :-D

The Australia monologue from his show Life. With English subtitles, yay! :-)

The 'retarded boy' monologue from a show called, ahem, A Finely Tuned Evening with Jonas Gardell. *cough*

There's plenty more where this came from, so I hope you enjoyed it ... !! ;-) trilltrall, guess what, I even found a clip with the rain ponchos ... !! :-D

And now for something completely different.

TGIF!!

Am I bubbling over with energy - no. Definitely not. So today's post will not be long and it will not be insightful *cough* and it will not deal with anything vaguely important. Just a very funny video for those who feel like watching one.

This is a clip from a Norwegian comedy show, but don't worry, it's in English. I mean, those of you who read this and don't understand Norwegian. Don't worry. It's in English because it's about the Danish language and how it's so incomprehensible, and ... oh, I don't have the energy to explain it all. I spent all my chattiness today on some nice customers that I do like a lot and on an 'anonymous' commenter here on the blog who is the reason why I've switched on that moderating thing again temporarily. Basically, written Norwegian and written Danish are almost the same thing. Long story. But when we open our mouths and start talking it's a different story. Danes sound to Norwegian ears as if they have their mouths full of something ... we like to say that Danish isn't really a language, it's a throat disease. This skit makes fun of that. But this is also a real problem, in that Danish is in fact beginning to collapse in on itself and is becoming increasingly incomprehensible even to native speakers. It's a real problem ... but fortunately it's not my problem. :-) Here's the video, enjoy! Have a great weekend!!

Ingrid Bjørnov live @ Standup 2008

Still stuck on August 22nd … :-)

So, Anéa and I checked out the Mela Festival and had a delicious meal at a couple of the stalls there, and then we wandered off to Aker Brygge, which is literally right next to City Hall Square, and where major things were going down that night. :-) OK, not so major, but fun. Some explications first:

Aker Brygge is a part of Oslo – it's way too small to call it a district, so let's call it a part – which is high priced and very fancy and where only rich people live. :-) Apartments there are ridiculously expensive. Apart from housing though there are also lots of stores (most of them fashionable clothing stores and so on, but there's normal stuff too like bookstores etc), a really nice movie theater (which isn't any more expensive than any other movie theater in Oslo, since the city owns them all) and a lot of restaurants and bars. Some very pricey but some perfectly affordable. There's a great Italian restaurant there that I like a lot, Eataly. (Say the name out loud. :-) Another thing that's there is Oslo's main comedy club, Latter (the name means 'laughter'). It used to be an IMAX theater, but that closed down and this club opened there instead a few years ago. They have several stages and they only put on comedy shows. In August every year for about a decade … I think this year's was the 9th … there is a comedy festival called the Stand Up Festival which is very popular, thousands of people come to see all kinds of comedians, everything from older established performers to brand new people just starting out, I think you can even sign up for workshops to learn about the, ahem, craft and then get to perform on one of the stages during the festivals. And they also bring in comedians from abroad to perform. So … a lot of fun to be had if you like that kind of thing. :-)

I'm not sure I can honestly say that Anéa and I are huge comedy fans … but we were going to one of the shows, one where various different people were going to perform, doing 5-10 minute routines each, because Anéa's boss was appearing in it and we wanted to see that. Anéa works part time as assistant to singer/pianist/songwriter/all around musical genius Ingrid Bjørnov, who is so talented and smart and funny that I hardly know where to start. :-) If you think you remember her name, that might be from my posts on Which Witch, the magnificent opera musical of which she is one of the creators. (Sheesh, not a good sentence.) Since then she has moved on to have a great career in TV and radio, but she also writes her own songs and performs them in stage shows which have been – and I am not exaggerating – wildly successful. I wish I could describe her style, but again, I'd hardly know where to start. Let's say … humorous, quirky, offbeat … and anyone wanting to add more adjectives, bring it on. Findabair for instance is a big fan; I'm sure you can think of something. :-) Ingrid's released just one solo album, but she's constantly writing songs. On the night of her performance at the Stand Up Festival she was far from well prepared; in fact, she had written the song she was singing the very same day. :-D

Hers was the only musical segment of the show, everyone else did standup; the show was emceed by a completely hyper Alex Rosén, he was definitely on something. Quel surprise. >:-) I think he's an unfunny creep anyway, so the fact that he was talking out of his ass didn't really bother me. The acts before Ingrid were extremely varied … I mainly remember two of them, one who was hilarious and one who was absolutely not funny in any way shape or form whatsoever. Everyone applauded when he left, I think mostly out of relief. Ingrid though was well received and got lots of both laughs and applause. Yay. :-)

I think I took a picture of the outside of the club, so it should be coming up here later tonight. :-)

PHOTO COMING UP

I also wanted to take some pictures during the performance. But some bouncerlike guy saw me holding my camera and told me that it wasn’t allowed. I felt that this was pretty unfair since there were numerous other people in the audience taking pictures, with flash and all. But Anéa and I were sitting by the door and it was easy to step over to us, so we were easy to tell off. Well, he said it in a nice and polite way. But it's the principle of the thing. So just to get my own back I recorded the audio of Ingrid's entire performance and posted it all on youtube. >:-) I would have just taken a few pictures, but no. >:-)

Since this was my old camera I had to divide the performance up into three 3-minute clips. :-( But better than nothing.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Part 3:

Unfortunately, this song – like all her songs – is in Norwegian. So you non-Scandinavians reading this will have to just enjoy her pretty voice. :-) I can tell you what the song is about, though – Ingrid often lets oddball news stories inspire her and this song is about a true story of a dentist who earlier this year applied to be allowed to serve alcohol in his office. He said to the press that he has quite a few patients who are phobic about visiting a dentist, and that he doesn’t feel Novocaine etc really works with these people. So he hoped to be able to give them some booze to calm their nerves instead.

Really a true story from somewhere in southeast Norway this spring. :-D

'Little Britain USA'

I love Little Britain. I think it's incredibly funny. Matt & David are geniuses. They are disgusting but they are BRILLIANT.

Oh my god or sumfin or nuthin, I can't believe you just said that!! :-o

Yeah, Vicky rules. >:-) I wouldn't want to be her, but she completely utterly cracks me up. Yes but no but yes but no but ...

Have some cake, we all love some cake don't we, we like a bit of cake.

I've been skeptical of their foray into the wider world, but after seeing the above, I am totally won over. Can't wait to see the whole series.
