J&M tell it like it is

I love Jesus and Mo. I mean, who doesn't? Sometimes - or in fact, often - the Author just says things so well and puts his finger on something so exactly. And in only four panels, too. Major kudos.

Shopping and the amazing Internet

I've done a little shopping today *cough* ... some things for Swap-Bot, some postcards, some crafty things ... and my monthly purchase at Tronsmo. I buy something there every month - my contribution to keeping the best bookstore in the country around as long as possible. You should do the same! :-) I found some fantastic postcards there, and a book of cartoons that I've been meaning to get for like three years. Hugleikur Dagsson, the funniest man in Iceland. But should you really be laughing at this?

Oh shit, the mayor's coming! Helen, hide the retard!
I have a name.

Why are you getting a divorce?
Because your father's a necrophiliac.
I can't help it.

I also put in a couple of hours at Friends, and of course I had to pick up a few things there too. I always shop every time I work there, I can't help it. Just a little chocolate ... and ooh, that tea looks really good ... and I'm almost out of sugar and look at this gorgeous bag! Ekcetra. Today I also picked up one earring. We'd gotten a new shipment of jewellery from Pernille Bülow's Unique and Fair series that I unpacked, priced and tagged ... one of the pairs of earrings was one short. Since I only have one ear pierced this seemed pretty perfect for me, so I bought it. It's so pretty too. And the bead's made from recycled glass. :-)

Now here's an example of what is so great about the Internet. Of course since we sell this jewellery line at Friends, you know it's fair trade. But this company has taken it one step further, beyond just getting their fair trade certification. My earring was made by a woman who is three years older than me; her name is Augustina and she is a single mother with two daughters. She doesn't have a lot of education herself, but thanks to what she earns making this jewellery she's able to send both her girls to school. You can see some pictures of her here. Isn't that just amazing? :-)

ESC + EQ

OK, so, as we all know, I'm a huge Eurovision Song Contest fan. If you've read the info in the sidebar, you'll know that I'm also a huge ElfQuest fan. I've actually been the latter for years longer than the former. ElfQuest isn't for everyone, but if you like it, you love it. And I love it. My favorite part is the First Quest, and then Kings of the Broken Wheel a close second. In case anyone was wondering. :-) Anyway.

I've been very distracted by Youtube recently, because I've been filming so much this summer and I'm finally working out how to edit video snippets ... in a very simple way, but still, you've gotta start somewhere. Anyway. Here's something kind of crazy that I found on Youtube recently. It's ... ESC + EQ. Yeah.

That still frame that's been chosen makes the whole thing look pretty cheesy, but please give it a chance. :-)

Venka is a really good character, I like her. I love the scene where she finally meets her father for the first time. She plays it so cool but you just know she's shaking in those pretty boots Moonshade made her. ;-) Well, who can blame her with a dad like that. >:-) I also like the song. It's the Greek entry from 2007. It placed 7th. I like it. (The performance, not so much.) But I never really saw it in ElfQuest ... or vice versa. o_O

Are you sick of 'Fairytale' already?

You are not alone. :-D

Pondus in Dagbladet on Wednesday this week. I just love this comic. :-D

Click to enlarge. Line in last panel: 'How much do I owe you?' And here is the inspiration.

Zofies verden 280109

This is a funny comic, when it's funny. Sometimes it's just stupid. But today's strip is funny. :-)

In English:
-That Barack Obama's no good. He's been at it for more than a week now and there's still war in the Middle East, poverty and huge global environmental problems.
-That guy's all talk.

I met Karstein Volle!

woot!! :-D

Remember a few days ago, um, let's see - the week before last, when I posted about an online comic whose creator had asked for a shoutout, so I gave him one? And I posted some samples of his work (click here to see that post). The artist, Mr Volle of this post's title, was grateful for the shoutout and not at all miffed that I'd posted his artwork without asking permission. I know, shame on me, in principle. I was pretty sure he wouldn't mind. ;-) Anyway ...

He lives in Helsinki, for some mysterious reason, but right now he's in the old country for a few days, couple of weeks, or whatever it is. This weekend he's in Oslo and, get this, he wanted to meet up with me. :-o He's going to some major comics fair in Angouleme at the end of this month, and he's translated some of his comics into English so he can present the strip to anyone & everyone he'll come across there. :-) And he wanted me to look at his translations and 'give him some pointers'. :-o It would be 'enormously cool' if I'd be willing to do that. o_O Willing!! He must be nuts. Of course I emailed him back and said that it would be an honor for me to help. I mean, seriously. Wow. :-)

So this afternoon we met at the Library Bar at Hotel Bristol downtown for some hot chocolate (mmm, chocolate ...) and looked at his translated pieces on his MacBook (I think it was a MacBook, but maybe it wasn't, I don't really know about these things) and just basically had a really nice and fun conversation. At least I thought it was. :-) We were there for almost five and a half hours. I had a really good time. And before we parted ways he asked me to - get this, again! - maybe, if I wanted to and I had the time, if I'd be willing, etc - to help translate the 57 In the Future strips that don't have translations yet. o_O Yeah, OK, I'll glance through them, whatever. 'If I'd be willing'. Yeah, he's gotta be nuts.

But apart from that he was - as far as I could tell in five hours ;-) - a really nice guy. Funny and smart. Pretty hungover, but not that slow on the uptake, even so. ;-) And he was even polite to the Coat Nazi. (But then again he'd never been to Bristol before, this was his first time, so I guess that explains it.) And - as expected - he was just happy to indulge me when I, before we left, went all fangirl on him and brought out my copies of his three books for him to sign. Thanks, the value just went up on those babies, I think. ;-)

A good time was hopefully had by all. :-)

Signing one of my books ... writing cryptic messages ...

I met Karstein Volle! woot! :-D

Shoutout: I fremtiden

Today's post will be of interest mostly to Norwegian-speaking readers, alas. Or at least those who understand the language well enough to read it. Although this comic is funny enough to make it worthwhile learning Norwegian just to read it. ;-)

I just want to give a shoutout to this blog, 'the online home of the daily comic In the Future'. The artist & blog owner asked me to ... well, not me specifically, but just all his readers. I fremtiden is a comic which tells us what the future will be like. It's going to be very interesting, I can tell you that. Some people resent this comic on principle because it isn't drawn by hand, but on computer ... which some purists 'feel' is cheating. Well, I stomp on their 'feelings'! This is an extremely funny comic and the artwork is just right, so there.

Karstein Volle, the artist, posts a new strip every day. He's a very funny man. If you can understand simple sentences in Norwegian and you're curious about what the future will be like, then hesitate no longer! You will find what you seek ... In the Future!!

Some samples (click to enlarge, all translations mine):

In the future, we will all die from mercury poisoning because of all the fish oil we force down our throats to be healthy.
In the future, everyone will have super quick wireless networks everywhere.
We will also have tumors the size of oranges. In the future, robots will FINALLY take over.
In the future, they're coming for you.
And here's my favorite. I love this strip. This is the future that I have always dreamed of!!

In the future, there will never be white Knotts in the Knott bags.

What are Knotts?? The most special candy there is ... !!?

Some political humor ...

... although actually, come to think of it, it isn't all that funny.

He's got his work cut out for him.

Og nå - noe helt annet.

Dagens Zofies verden i Dagbladet.

En ganske god tegneserie, som jeg liker. :-)

You learn something new every day ...

... and today I learned my daily something from a comic.

PhD Comics, to be precise, which I had never heard of until today, but discovered via a post on the Book Talk forum on BookCrossing. (Thanks, anthy18! :-)

While I was reading some random strips to see what this was all about, I came across this one. That is seriously so interesting. Really. I never heard of that guy before ... but of course, instant noodles had to have been invented by someone at some point. :-)

This quote is so true:

Peace will come to the world when all its people have enough to eat.

So ... never, then, basically. :-(

Frode Øverli er en person ...

... som har en del underlige tanker i hodet sitt.

Men han er ofte inne på noe!!
