ALBANIA: Kejsi Tola - Më merr në ëndërr

Aand ... we're on.

The first entry for next year's Eurovision Song Contest, to be held in Moscow in May, has been selected. Each nation has its own tradition in this respect and entries will be picked in various ways from this past weekend and over the coming months until ... March, probably. I will be blogging about all the entries as they are chosen. So, here goes. :-) Please welcome our very first contestant ...

... Albania!! Um, wahey, I guess. Not a nation that has a great ESC history behind it. (So far?? Naah ... ! :-D) This will be their sixth time competing. Their best result was this year when they placed 16th in the final, out of 25 entries. But hey, at least they got to the final, they hadn't managed that since 2005. :-) Anyway.

Albania selects their entry during the annual music festival Festivali i Këngës. The contest spans a whole weekend and this year 20 entries competed. This is what they picked. My thoughts? They ain't got a prayer. The song doesn't have a good melody, I can hardly remember the tune even while I'm listening to it. The singer isn't very good. (Hey, it's Christmas, let's be nice.) The presentation was totally boring ... but that's something they'll definitely change; and we know they have it in them, their presentation in Belgrade was pretty good (and I dug the video for that song). At a little over four minutes the song is way too long, so it'll need a serious reworking ... but the good news is that it'll be very easy to pick which parts to get rid of. WTF is up with that endless intro - during which the singer just stands there pretending to dance a little bit, but doesn't really. And then it comes back as the bridge! This song needs a lot of work, but I can't imagine there's anything they can do with it that will even get it through the semi in Moscow.

We aren't off to a good start. But the bright side is that it will have to get better from here. Anyway, don't take my word for it, check it out for yourselves. This is Më merr në ëndërr by Edmond Zhulali and Agim Doçi, performed by Kejsi Tola who will be competing for Albania.

The title of the song means 'you take me with you in a dream' or some such nonsense. Translation of the lyrics here. Kudos for singing in Albanian.

So, it'll be fun to see what kind of interest I can drum up for these posts. I do have some kind of fangirl/fanboy friends, there's no denying that. But there's one person in particular I'm thinking of. What will Findabair's take on the ESC be, say, a year from now?? ;-)

had to check up before I went to bed so I still think there is hope for findabair. remember these important words (luckily the brain cell cull was minimal)
"my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes"

Paz: don't worry, I don't walk on the dark side yet (haven't even gotten around to listening to this song yet). So there's still hope! And be careful yourself; before you know it she'll have you seduced by the ESC yourself :-O

When you do listen to this song, Findabair, don't expect anything - we're starting on a low point ... ;-)

As for your other, ahem, darker prediction, well ... no one knows what the future holds ... >:-)
